Public Radio Reporter/Host Also a, Yes, Roller Derby Doll

Whip It, the coming-of-age movie set in the wild world of roller derby, had a technical adviser from the wild world of public radio.

Alex Cohen, an anchor of the late of Day-to-Day and now at KPCC, is a roller derby doll for the Los Angeles based Tough Cookies. She got involved in the sport after doing a story on it while visiting Austin, TX.

The Wall Street Journal published an interview with Cohen today. In it, she explains her love of the sport and her on-track name:
“Axles of Evil” is like the trifecta of derby names — first, it’s play off my real name, so it’s easy for people to remember. It’s also inspired by my love of vintage cars, so my “Axle” is like a car axle, not a figure skater’s triple axel jump. Plus, at the time I picked it, we had this president who was always talking about the “axis of evil,” so as a news person, it was doubly appealing to me.

Just wanted to chime in as another public radio roller girl! I work for Vermont Public Radio and skate for the Green Mountain Derby Dames under the alias Susan Slamberg, with the number 107.9 FM (VPR's Burlington frequency)!
