Blogging from the auditorium of Arbitron HQ in Columbia, MD, where a consultant's PPM Fly-In is underway. We just got an initial summary of the first PPM results about measurement of internet radio streams and HD radio. These data report on encoded internet and HD streams from markets now being measured. They do not include internet-only stations (i.e. Yahoo radio) or podcasts. A few quick highlights:
1) 7% of the measured audience used digital radio in July. Among 25-54 respondents the number was 9%.
2) They have picked up small amounts of HD listening, but the numbers are not significant.
3) Online radio is a workplace phenomenon. The overwhelming proportion of online listening is done in middays on weekdays. 78% of online radio listening is way from home.
4) Online listening skews heavily toward 25-54 listeners.
5) Four seperately encoded digital radio stations met minimum reporting requirements in July. None were public stations. Note: they are seeing listening to many more digital stations but the amount of listening is below reporting standards.

No signifigant HD listeners yet millions enjoy unwanted illegal HD jamming on their analog sets.
Isn't that a study in irony?
HD jamming, which shill parrots vehemently deny, is so severe that KDKA's resale value reportedly was reduced due to severe HD interference from WBZ 1030.
Great, ain't it, how allegedly non-existent jamming not only jams your favorite stations but as well reduces station value? Wow!
Is that what they call unintended consquences? BigRadio devised a cynical 90s scheme to jam competing broadcasters to ruin and make listeners buy HD stooge radios. It failed. But as happens to idiot biz-model devotees too stiff-necked to turn back, they dug in and blamed 'HD haters' and those nefarious 'DXers' for their own poor judgement. What goes around has at last come around - BigRadio jams itself as leery audiences laugh - and walk away.
Nice going, BigRadio. Ever hear the old saw 'bout 'half a loaf being better than none'? No? How 'bout this, 'their greed shall be their downfall'? Fitting, eh?
Don't take my word for it. Check out BigRadio stock prices. Inna toilet? Nah. Backhouse basement. How's that for investor confidence?
For sake of air quality, quit HD jamming and please, throw another loada lime there over that steaming lump called 'HD Radio', what stinks up the backhouse.

Yeah, those HD radios are really flying out of the stores, they sell so fast here in MA I'm lucky to see them in any stores at all. It may have something to do with how well they work. I've actually heard of a few 5 mile receptions, real DX! I'll keep my analog radios, no thanks.
